Cambodia’s Ka Nets Two Titles at “Battle of Bay”

Cambodia’s Andrea Ka, who competed in the mixed doubles at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia and led the Kingdom’s historic debut in the women’s team event at the 2015 Singapore edition three months ago, has reached a career high by winning the singles and doubles titles on Sunday in the most prestigious collegiate competition on the West Coast of the United States.

Representing the University of San Francisco, Ka (pictured) swept to twin championship success at the California Tennis Club in a six-team event dubbed the Battle in the Bay.

In the singles final, Ka had to go the full distance before beating Laura Gulbe of University of Pepperdine 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

In the doubles final, the Cambodian star partnered Thyra Taune to upstage Dzina Milovanovic and Laura Gulbe (Pepperdine) 8-7 in a thrilling tie-break.

“It was a great weekend for me. Even though I haven’t competed in a while, I was able to perform at a really good level.

I had a lot of third sets and the temperatures were really high throughout this weekend so it was physically and emotionally very tiring to compete out there,’’ Ka said.

I’m just happy that I was able to get through all my matches and win both titles.’’

Head women’s tennis coach Hilary Somers said: “It was a great performance.

“Andrea has worked really hard for all of these fall tournaments coming up and I think she was really mentally ready.”

Tennis Cambodia expressed delight over Ka’s success.

“It augurs well for Cambodian tennis that she’s come out on top in an event that had some teams ranked among the first 10 in the ITA Collegiate rankings,” said Phalkun Mam, Ka’s teammate in Singapore and head of Junior Development.
