Crowning the next junior champion

May 25th, 2016 Written by Tennis Cambodia

Crowning the third national junior title is just around the corner. Tennis players from across the country will be traveling to Phnom Penh to compete at the Cambodian Country Club (CCC). The tournament is set to be played for Friday, May 27th to Sunday, May 29th.

Players from Kep Province and the greater Phnom Penh area will camp out on site in tents all weekend long. Players in attendance will be our top junior players and former boys U18 champion, Sen Sophon. Having been introduced to the game through Tennis Cambodia’s grassroot programs, Sophon has risen in the ranks to the #1 spot in just under four short years.

Khleang Ponlok, Tep Timothy, and Chheang Vannsith are former Jr. Davis Cup players also competing this weekend. In addition for players to look for in the tournament is boys U18 finalist, Leng Sarinreach who has been preparing his game in training for another shot at the title.

On the girls side, two former Tennis Cambodian players are no strangers to the game and to each other. Hour Sreypov and Ho Sreynoch both players training together at the headquarters of Tennis Cambodia in Phnom Penh will be in attendance this weekend.

In our girls U12 and U14 division, Happy Chandara players will be playing their second national junior tournament ever. As they have just been introduced to the game, there are many keen players looking to improve since last tournament and all are excited at another chance to play.

Matches are free to attend and all are welcomed to come cheer on the rising players of Cambodia.

We proudly announce Hagar Restaurant and Catering as the sponsor of the tournament as they are generously providing meals for the children during the tournament. During the 2nd National Tournament, we received used tennis grips from one of Singapore’s top player’s Sarah Pang and another donation of 10 shoes for competing players to take back home with them to the practice courts.

We are very thankful for the support from all around the world and very humbled from our local donations. We hope to see you at CCC as our top players come back to compete for the Cambodian U12, U14, and U18 National titles.

In the next weeks to come, four of Cambodia’s junior players, Ho Sreynoch, Khleang Ponlok, Leng Sarinreach and Sen Sophon will be traveling to Bangkok, Thailand to participate in the ITF/ATF 16 Under Development Training Camp held at the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand who will be assisted by traveling coach, Laura Pola. The camp is held over 12 days, and will include fitness testing/training, meditation, and a little bit of sightseeing; and all of this on top of several hours on court. Cambodia will be joined by many of the other developing tennis nations in Asia, which will make for a great experience for our players and coach to train and interact with some of best up and coming players in the region.
