Futures Defeat: Kenny Loses to Czech Rival in Colombo

Cambodia’s Bun Kenny, fighting hard to pick up his first ranking point in nearly two years, crashed out of the First Sri Lankan ITF $10,000 Men’s Futures, beaten 3-6, 3-6 in the first round of the main draw by Salaba Libor at Colombo’s Gymkhana club clay court yesterday.

The 24-year-old Kenny, who will lead the Kingdom’s Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group III campaign in Kuala Lumpur this March, noticeably struggled with his serve throughout, as his 705th ranked Czech rival broke him five times while dropping his own serve twice, and that only in the second set.

Given a wild card to the main draw of 32, Kenny’s hesitant start allowed Libor the luxury of an early break. Serving to stay in the first set at 3-5, Kenny managed to save three set points but 22-year-old Libor cashed in on the fourth as he hammered a winning service return.

Beginning the second set on a positive note by breaking Libor, Kenny appeared well on course to take the fight to his rival. But Libor quickly wrested the momentum and never loosened his grip.

There are two more events lined up back to back. Kenny may pick up another wild card for next week’s event. In the event he doesn’t, he will go through the qualifying rounds.
