Our last hope in singles, Kenny Bun, survived to pass through to the main draw by defeating Nattasit Koonsuwan of Thailand, 2-6 7-6(1) and 10-5 in the match tiebreaker. After losing the first set, he played more fearless and loose tennis, and fought through the second set to get to the breaker. In the tiebreaker he unleashed several backhand winners to win 7-1 to take control of the match tiebreaker early and finished on top 10-5. Bun will play the first round of the main draw tomorrow morning.
In doubles action yesterday at the Singha Bangkok Open after both Bun and Dimong won their opening qualifying round matches, Phalkun Mam and partner Samneang Long tasted victory in their first round of the men’s qualifying round in doubles, beating Tos Puengrasamee and Warit Boonrak 6-0 6-3, playing solid and smart doubles.
After a team withdrew from the draw, Our Sarith and Chheang Vannasak were able to enter as alternates, but only to fall 6-0 6-2 to Tonkla Mulada and Noppadol Noykor of Thailand.
This afternoon, Mam and Long will face Tawatchai Boonrat and Leo Witoontien in the final qualifying round of the men’s doubles draw.
Just this morning, Long played against Suppawit Apitanawit of Thailand in the final round of qualifying, but lost in a hurry 6-1 6-0. Apitanawit put many balls in play, which was something Long struggled with today.
