Khleang Ponlok Makes the Best of Backdraw

After a welcome rest day and a refreshing tour of the bustling Ho Chi Minh City, the Cambodian trio of Sen Sophon, Klang Punlok and Leng Sarinreach will get on to the court today for the second week of competition in the ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championship at the Pho Tho tennis Club.

Of the three, Klang Punlok came out the best in the consolation bracket of the first tournament that ended on Friday by winning three matches following his loss in the first round of the main draw. It took some smart work by Punlok in the tie breaker, which he won 10-5, to wrap up his last match in the back-draw against Wong Fei Long of Macau after the first two sets had been split. Punlok lost the first 2-6 but then staged a comeback by taking the second 6-1.

Earlier in a match decided by the Compact sets format, Punlok dominated Yusuf Ahmed Akram, of Maldives in a 4-0, 4-1 rout. Meanwhile the final day proved fruitless for both Sen Sophon and Leng Sarinreach.

Sarinreach went down fighting 6-1, 2-6, 11-9 to Paing Ye Min of Myanmar after suffering a 0-4,0-4 loss to Amiya of Bangladesh; Cambodia’s No 1 ranked player in the age group, Sen Sophon was beaten 2-6,4-6 by Pakistan’s Rehan Hamza. Earlier, Jalal Sadek of Libya defied his small build to score an emphatic 6-1,6-2 win over Sophon.
