Sponsor of Futures Pledges Continued Support

The main sponsor of the ongoing three-legged $10,000 ITF Futures Series, the Group Lease Finance Plc, has pledged its continued support to Tennis Cambodia to help a structured growth of the game so that the country could benefit from a succession of good players.

The chairman of GLF, Japanese business tycoon Mitsuji Konoshita, said that his commitment to back Cambodia was far sighted and firm.

“Tennis Cambodia has defied great odds to reach the level of excellence that it has achieved and I realise the importance of lending a helping hand to a federation that is doing an amazing job of spreading tennis to every corner of the country” Konoshita said. “By the time the country is ready to host the SEA Games in 2023 for the first time, I feel strongly that we need to do everything in our power in the next seven to eight years to develop a tennis team that would be capable of winning us medals glory.”

In an unprecedented gesture of benevolence, the GLF chairman literally opened his wallet, announcing personal cash incentives to all quarterfinalists and above during the just-concluded 20th Tep Khunnah memorial and the ensuing Sixth Cham Prasidh Open. The GLF chief promised $5000 to the winner, $3,000 to the runner-up and $2,000 each to the quarterfinalists.

The secretary-general of Tennis Cambodia, Tep Rithivit, said the arrival on the sponsorship scene nearly four years ago of Mitsuji Konoshita had totally changed the dynamic in Cambodia.

“Blessed as we are by his magnanimity, we are also touched by his keen personal interest in what we do and his deep involvement will make us work that much harder to realise the lofty goals that we have set for ourselves,” he said.
