An outstanding day of competition was held at the National Training Center in Cambodian Country Club this Saturday. Competition is still underway and heading into the final day as the third junior national title looks to crown champions in the U12, U14, and U18 boys and girls category.

In Saturday’s competition, a few challenging matches were witnessed and the number one seed in the Boy 18 & Under was ousted by Michael Schipani beating Timothy Tep 6-2, 6-2. As one of the final matches of the day, Sanrinreach Leng, also competing in the Boy 14 & Under category, his third match of the day he came out firing three sets to beat Ponlok Khleang 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Meeting Leng in the semifinals today will be defending national champion Sophon Sen who had a roller coaster of a match against Bunthea Ith who came out as a consistent machine trying to fight off Sophon closing out a 7-6, 6-3 score. Schipani will look to face Vannasith Chheang in the other semifinals today where matches will begin in the morning at 8am.

In the Boy 14 & under category, round robin play in Pool A and Pool B will determine the champion at this year’s title. Leng in Pool A won all three of his matches beating Raksmey Holy, Pheakdey Tith and Somrith Vimean all in a 4-0 4-1 fashion. In Pool B David Sam will look to face Touch Rith tomorrow as both have showed great wins yesterday among their pool players Samnang Nel, Sarim Yoeun and Rotha Soeung.

In the Boy 12 & under category, the number one player, Sokheng will look to face Chaya Chhieu while Vuth Lim and San Ngong will face each other in the other head to head in Sunday matches. San and Sokheng are both undefeated in their pool and this will be a sure-fire match for both of them to play.

Moving to the girls side in the under 18 category, Tippi Dalle Grave attempted to upset Sreynoch Ho yesterday as Sreynoch didn’t let up Tippi to take the win beating her 6-1 6-3. Tippi did however show some fearless tennis as she defeated Apsara Chhieu 6-3 6-3. The defending champion from the second national championships is scheduled to play today and to defend her title, she will face the pressure of needing to win three matches in a row against all the players. Sreynoch and Apsara look to face each other on Sunday morning.

In the Girls 14 & under Tippi and Apsara go head to head again. The match will be played at 9am Sunday.

The Girls 12 & Under has many more improved players in the draw with familiar names. The draw size in the 12’s category begins matches in the round of 16. Moving through the draw to the¬†semifinals, the number one seed, Phally Soang will face a dear friend of hers, Lika Vibol. On the other side of the draw, Sophanith Kea and number two seed, Sreyvin Chhorn will face each other in Sunday morning matches. The remarkable thing about all the girls in the 12 & under category is that this is their second tournament ever played. And since the last national title, the girls have shown tremendous improvements with more rallies, closer battles in the matches.

As Saturday’s matches come to a close, Sunday will be another fun and exciting filled day for the players in the draw. Matches will begin at 8am Sunday morning in the Cambodian Country Club with the championship match beginning play in the afternoon at 2pm. Come watch as the rising players of Cambodia compete for the title.
