Christian Didier CHIN from Malaysia, the #1 seed with a current ranking of 269, won his first match against KOSAKA Yusei of Japan 6-1 6-1. It wasn’t quite a battle between who had better serves or who hit bigger off the baseline, but instead a match that Christian manipulated according to his opponents style. By making serves, slicing returns back in, and coming in whenever he had the chance, Christian kept his opponent at bay and out of sorts, unable to win more than 2 games in the match.
2nd seeded Ali MOORAJ of Pakistan, but who lives and trains in Singapore, won his match against KAMARUZZAMAN Naufal of Malaysia. Ali has a very mature game and the #297 ranked MOORAJ used it well against Naufal. Next up for MOORAJ will be a true test, as he faces Diego Garcia Dalisay of the Philippines, last October’s ITF Junior Champion in Cambodia.
On the girl’s side, #1 seed, and 402nd ranked junior player in the world, Rina SAIGO of Japan just lost 1 game in her first round meeting with Yu Hua CHENG of Chinese Taipei.
Sumin KIM of Korea, seeded 2nd and ranked 417, lost a game in each on her way to victory over Sophie Maho Hamada from Japan.
In the 1st round of boys doubles action, Tep Timothy and Leng Sarinreach made a last charge after going down 6-0 and 4-1, to even the match at 5-5! Unfortunately that’s where they stopped. Lee Wonseok and Yoon Joonhee may have lost some focus, combined with our team’s ability to put more balls in the court. At the end of the 2nd set, a crucial no-ad deuce point, and an easy put away missed caused the momentum to turn and the match won by the Koreans.
Chheang Vannasith and Khleang Ponlok played on Court 2 against the #2 seeds, Ali MOORAJ from Pakistan, and Diego Garcia Dalisay of the Philippines. Both teams must have started out nervous as the first 3 games were breaks of serves. That ended when last year’s ITF champion in the Tep Khunnah, Dalisay, stepped up to serve to put his team up 3-1. From there the 2nd seeded team went on to win 6-2 6-1.
Ho Sreynoch will play on Wednesday with partner from Japan, Remi Nakayama, who was a WC into the Main Draw for singles this week but lost in the first round. They will face a Chinese Taipei duo of Jyun Yi LEE (TPE) and CaiNi WANG (TPE) in the afternoon.
